Designer, do you dig this privacy hole further, or do you start filling it, now that the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP Bill 2023) is law in India? So far, startups, corporates, enterprises gleefully design without care and often with deliberate intention to harvest as much data as they can of end-users. While Design is also tapped in to cleverly hook and addict people to go on sharing even more personal and private data. Until now.

The DPDP Bill 2023 brings liability to you. As a designer, a startup co-founder, or even an enterprise, are you aware of how to strategize on design? The DPDP Bill legislation sets out your responsibilities in handling and processing digital data while upholding the rights of individuals in India. For those violating digital privacy in India, substantial penalties wil jolt you: from a minimum of Rs 50 crores to a maximum of Rs 250 crores.

So let’s give Ekta Rohra Jafri a listen.

Ekta is an award winning designer with 3iXDAs and Honorary Indigo & IF design awards in social and behavioural change. Moving on from her career stints in Design leadership roles at IBM iX, Times Group, NDTV, and others, she is currently volunteering for TechBridge a company which enables bridges to form between policy and tech innovation. She dances on the edge of these two disciplines constantly, often stepping into the territory of law, constitution and democracy to understand what is needed in design today to enable a better tomorrow. She writes speculative fiction set 15 years ahead in India and she started doing it 6 years ago. From the future vision, she extracts elements of experience which can be woven into policy and law today.

Recently she wrote an article on how the new Digital Personal Data Protection Act will affect how we design digital products. It’s an insightful piece with tips on how to interpret policy to ensure compliance and ethical designs.
